Everyone needs a break form time to time, so this post is a break from the senior care issues to point out some interesting links relating to other stuff going on in my life - this includes a problem with geese in the yard, a teenager who plays World of Warcraft all day, and my random web travels.
First to the geese. The neighbor has a small pond in his yard which I think was left over from when this was all farm. Every spring the Canadian geese fly in and land in the pond and set up for the summer and make them selves a general nuisance in the whole neighborhood. Gees on the lawn, geese on the road, honking geese early in the morning, you get the picture. I have tried a lot of things to get rid of the geese and I found an interesting web site of ideas on how to get rid of geese. He has tried many of the same things as I have to get rid of the geese but he seems to have a more scientific approach.
The other problem I have is a teenager who want to play World of Warcraft online all the time. I found a site on World of Warcraft Addiction that makes me know I am not alone on this. He would rather get gold on line and use it to buy World of Warcraft gear than make real U.S. dollars for doing chores around the house to buy real things. It is a scary day when a teenager is more interested in virtual money than real money and virtual friends than real friends. I wish there was some way for him to get a virtual job.
I have also been poking around on line myself and have found some interesting reading at Pops Picks and at Where to Find Good Ideas, both of which have a good view of the world and I enjoy reading them when they post updates. I am finding myself spending less time online now that the weather is getting better. Though it has been cold the past week or so we are supposed to have a big warm up this weekend and I ma looking forward to it.
That's all for now. Hopefully back to senior issues soon.

finding a job online
On an unrelated topic, I have been looking for a new job (haven't we all) and I came across some good information on how to do it using mostly on line services and information. This blog how to find a high paying job online has some really interesting information. It seems like the gentleman who writes it knows a lot about finding a good job online.
My current job is shaky at best and I really think it is time to find a new job. I want to be careful since the economy is so bad, but because of that I don;t think I have much time left at my current job. I spend a lot of time on line but I don't know a whole lot about job searching online. His ideas make a lot of sense when you read them and I think that there is a lot of benefit to doing it right when looking for a job. Since I am a professional and doing pretty well I am looking for a high paying job so his writing is even more relevant. Check it out.

Senior housing - assisted living option
As mentioned before I take care of my senior mother and we are looking for housing options for her. I'll get to what we found about assisted living in a moment, or maybe next time, but I did come across some interesting sites with information. For example this one on senior care and this one from another person who takes care of a senior.
It seems that this is a growing topic among bloggers. Some of these sites have some interesting statistics on senior care and how it impacts both the senior and the person caring for them. Interesting that people tend to write a lot about senior housing options as well. I guess that finding the right housing is a major issue. That means we are not alone and that the time I have spent looking into housing options is doing the right thing.
Of course is also means that there are a lot of senior citizens out there and a lot of people who care for them who we are competing with for the right housing option. Once thing I have already noticed with the senior housing places we have looked at, and is probably true for assisted living also, is there is a long waiting list. As morbid as it seems, you are basically waiting for a senior to die or move to a nursing home so that you can get their spot in the senior housing complex or in the assisted living facility.
Since I am running on here, I guess I'll pick up on assisted living next time.

Senior housing options
As I mentioned in my last post, I am helping my elderly mother get into a better senior living situation. She lives one her own (with regular visits from friends and relatives) but she really needs something more suited to care for senior citizens.
We decided to break the options into groups: such as assisted living, senior housing, retirement homes/communities. Then we set down to find the pros and cons for each. (As a side note, these are starting to get listed on SeniorsNH.com - which has housing info for senior citizens and those who care for them in New Hampshire.
She does not need a nursing home, and from what I have seen of them I hope she never does. It is like warehousing from seniors and is very depressing. There is typically an over-worked, under trained staff of non-English speaking people responsible for large numbers of seniors in advanced stages of deteriorating health. These senior citizens who should be loved and cared for are instead treated like cattle much of the time. I'm sure there are nicer places, but the places I have visited are not places I would ever let a senior citizen that I cared for wind up in.
The next step down is assisted living facilities. Since I think this is going to be the answer for my mother I'll skip it and come back.
The next step is senior housing - basically apartments only for senior citizens, typically with some kind of social structure. There are some nice places here in Southern NH with some nice people we met. My mother liked them, and she feels that she would do well in an environment that is, as she puts it: of the Seniors, by the Seniors, and for the Seniors. My concern though is that this means she is really relying on the elderly man next door, or the lady down the hall for help. Since these people are all senior citizens too, it is not the best support group. I also don't think it is really fair. We're still considering the senior housing option though.
Next time more on senior communities and assisted living.

Senior Living and Care Intro
A friend of mine started a blog to deal with the issues she comes across while helping and trying to find resources for her elderly uncle. I decided that was a good idea so I am starting this to chronicle getting my mother into a better living situation and a senior citizen.
She is finally realizing that she it isn't safe for her to live alone in her house so she has agreed to let me help her look into assisted living, retirement homes, and retirement communities. I am going to try to describe the issues and successes we had had trying to find her services and a better place to live. She is right on the edge of needing assisted living, but a good senior housing or retirement living situation may work. She doesn't need a nursing home, I hope we don;t ever have to go that route.
We decided to break the options into groups: assisted living, senior housing, retirement homes/communities, and address the pro and cons for each including type of care, services, community, activities, medical care, cost, etc., and then decide which was best for her.
I'll list the what we came up with for each type in future posts.
